News: Family tradition leads to winning Summerfair poster design

This year’s Summerfair poster designer, Wendy Bentley, is no stranger to Summerfair. In fact, both Wendy and her mother, Janet Metzelaar, have Summerfair art work in their homes. For years Wendy’s mother encouraged her to enter into the annual poster competition and after finally submitting a design in 2010, Wendy won!

“My mom asked me for years to compete in the Summerfair competition. After relaunching my company, Wendy Bentley Design, I felt it would be a good time to try,” said Wendy.

Her mother believed Wendy had the sensibility to reflect the broad range of artwork that is displayed at Summerfair. After all Wendy, as a licensed artist, is no stranger to the Cincinnati art scene. She has designed logos and posters for the annual Thanksgiving Day Race, in addition to creating original pottery and mural paintings.

“I loved the idea of having one of Wendy’s designs symbolize all the artisans whose work is displayed at Summerfair. She has such a lovely mix of styles, bringing in elements of nature, texture and poetry to her paintings,” said Janet. “I thought this would be a perfect place for her to contribute to our local art scene.”

Wendy selected a butterfly to be the focal point for her poster, and each element of her design reflects the artwork and talent that is exhibited annually at Summerfair.

“A butterfly seemed like a great icon for Summerfair. It represents freedom to me and a metamorphosis into a beautiful creation, similar to the way an art piece is created,” said Wendy. “This image from a distance is bold and recognizable, but upon closer study, the many layers of beauty are revealed.”

Wendy’s winning poster design can be purchased by calling Summerfair at 513-531-0050, or at this year’s Fair, occurring June 4-6.
