Executive Director's Update:

Summerfair Cincinnati’s VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

Summerfair Cincinnati (SFC) is chock full of enthusiastic and passionate member VOLUNTEERS! Every month, I'll be highlighting several SFC members who continue to go "above and beyond" for the good of the organization. This article will also be highlighted and archived on our website, www.summerfair.org. It’s a fun way to get to know your SFC colleagues – especially some of their personal interests!

What is a D.E.V.?

D:    ded’ i – cat’ ed adj. Devoted, faithful
E:    en-thu’ si – as’ tic adj. Intense or eager interest, zeal
V:    vol – un – teer n. one who chooses freely to do something

This month, let’s learn more about our fearless leader, Board President Dave Ziegler and his significant other, past 2007 Co-Fair Chair Dee Newton.

A link to prior Volunteers of the Month is shown at the bottom of the page.

Meet December 2009 D.E.V.: Dave Zielger and Dee Newton

How many years have you been with Summerfair Cincinnati?
Dave: 21 years
Dee: 18 years - most of that as an outside volunteer

Why did you join the organization?
Dave: To meet Dee. Okay…I was recruited to help with the Concessionaires…schlepped quarters and ice. I got hooked on the event from day one!
Dee: Koben Hinman and another friend recruited me to work. My favorite job was working wine and beer sales. We were warned never to pour for the Gang. I fell in love with the Fair and vowed someday to be a real Green shirt!

What's your favorite thing about being a member volunteer?
Dave: No joking here…I love Summerfair…the people, the event, what it does for this community, and for the reputation we've created throughout North America. We have a LOT to be proud of and it's always wonderful to be part of a winning team!
Dee: I love being part of the process. It's wonderful to walk around the Fair and know that you were part of bringing this to Cincinnati.

What Fair committee do you normally work on? Why?
Dave: In a way, all of them, given my role. Outside of that..THE GANG!!!!! I love the Gang ... I love the work, I love helping our exhibitors and patrons! Always fun and you always come away with GREAT stories.
Dee: I try to get involved in many areas of the Fair. I especially like pre-fair stuff and have recently worked with Krista on small organization grants.

What's one favorite memory you have from your green shirt experience at the Fair?
Dave: Uh…meeting Dee! Every year brings special memories. Certainly the "FLOOD" year brings back great memories … including the dunk tank!
Dee: Chairing with Ashley (2007) in our tye-dyed green shirts. Also, of course, meeting Dave at the 2006 Fair.

What's your favorite Summerfair poster?
Dave: The 95 and 96 Fairs. (Those were my two years as Fair Chair.)
Dee: Too many to choose from!

Tell us a little about yourself…
Dave: Born in Detroit in 1957… degree in Electrical Engineering. One sister, two brothers (I'm the second child, oldest son … not sure what that says about me.) Have been with P&G for 29.5 years.
Dee: I am a Cincinnati native with a brief respite in California. I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Masters in Health Administration.

In what Cincinnati community do you live?
Dave and Dee: Village of North Bend.
Are you married? Not yet!!!!!!
Kids? Yes, his name is Jack. He has a wet nose and a tail and is very spoiled! His best friend is Cooper!

Where are you employed and what's your role there?
Dave: P&G. My official title is GBS Win In Market Global Client Manager for P&G Professional.
Dee: Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services for the past 25 years. My title is Service Facilitator, which is a fancy name for Case Manager.

Hobbies (besides Summerfair!)?
Dave: There is something besides Summerfair? Okay..I enjoy golfing, working around the house…some traveling
Dee: traveling, reading, making baskets - although I haven't done that in quite some time.

Do you make art / crafts?
Dave: LOL…you must be kidding … I just purchase them.
Dee: I've done lots of needlework before - cross-stitch, needlepoint, etc and have made baskets.

Where's your favorite vacation spot?
Dave: Family cottage in Northern Michigan.
Dee: Charleston, SC; Bar Harbor, ME; Paris!

What's your favorite drink / food?
Dave: Wine for drink…Escargot for food .
Dee: Wine, chocolate and most anything Italian.

What book are you currently reading?
Dave: David Baldacci "True Blue".
Dee: Am looking forward to starting "Scarpetta". I like murder mysteries.

What's your favorite sports team?
