Executive Director's Update:

Summerfair Cincinnati’s VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

Summerfair Cincinnati (SFC) is chock full of enthusiastic and passionate member VOLUNTEERS! Every month, I'll be highlighting several SFC members who continue to go "above and beyond" for the good of the organization. This article will also be highlighted and archived on our website, www.summerfair.org. It’s a fun way to get to know your SFC colleagues – especially some of their personal interests!

What is a D.E.V.?

D:    ded’ i – cat’ ed adj. Devoted, faithful
E:    en-thu’ si – as’ tic adj. Intense or eager interest, zeal
V:    vol – un – teer n. one who chooses freely to do something

Two Summerfair Members are featured this month. They are Judy Jackson, Board Treasurer and Krista Paas, Board Trustee Grants.

A link to prior Volunteers of the Month is shown at the bottom of the page.

Meet April 2009 D.E.V.: Judy Jackson

Judy Jackson is an enthusiastic new member who graciously came to Summerfair Cincinnati through the request of her friend and business associate, Dustin Minton, Board VP of Finance. She was just recently voted in as a member and Board Treasurer at our March membership meeting; and has been in the office quite often – averaging at least twice a month, plus meetings.

Judy has a BA in Fine Arts, but her career path the past 12 years has been as a Controller at start-up companies. She is an artist with beading being her current artist outlet. She has enjoyed making other forms of art, including modeling, painting, photography and textiles.

In joining Summerfair Cincinnati, Judy says, “I like being a part of an organization that helps others. There are so many, practically invisible ways that SFC helps the Tri-State area. Every person who attends or shows in the Fair is touched in some way. An artist meeting a new customer or new admirer of their work; a local coming out to see the show and realizing how much this area has to offer its residents; a family getting out for a day with their family; the grants SFC can offer and a venue for young artists to show their work…”

Currently, Judy is involved with the business operations side of the Fair (and the organization as a whole) as she handles the accounting for all of SFC events. She says that it’s a “nice way to be involved with the entire organization, to get a feel of what is going on.” As this will be her first Fair, she is excited to get started and see how everything comes together. “I am anticipating many wonderful memories of this experience.”

Judy lives in West Chester with her husband and son. She is starting her own company; producing renewable energy and selling electricity to retailers. Judy is the Founder and President. Hobbies include reading, quilting, beading, environmental issues, renewable energy and exploring with her five year old son. Her favorite vacation spot is right in her own backyard with a good book! She enjoys iced tea and Fettuccini Alfredo. Currently, she’s reading The Solace of Leaving Early, by Haven Kimmel. Her favorite “team” is Dale Earnhardt Jr. of NASCAR and the Cincinnati Reds.

Meet April 2009 D.E.V.: Krista Paas

Krista Paas joined SFC through the Fine Arts Fund’s “Business on Board” program. This will be her third Fair. However, she’s been shopping at the Fair for the past 10 years! Krista joined the FAF BoB program because she wanted to get more involved with the arts…and lucky for us, during the “speed dating” portion of the training she choose SFC and we choose her…and the rest, as they say, is history!

She loves the fact that SFC raises money to support so many different art programs and artists, especially since she enjoys so many types of art. Krista has also developed a fondness for all the SFC members. Currently, she heads the layout committee at the Fair, which is a perfect fit as she’s an architect. One of her “favorite” memories of the Fair is when she spent one very cold spring Saturday pacing all of Coney, checking for 10’ x 10’ clear areas. Her favorite poster is the 40th (since that was her first Fair).

Krista lives in Pleasant Ridge with her two cats. She’s addicted to reading, and enjoys making jewelry, gardening, travel and TV. She used to make bronze sculptures using the lost wax method. Her favorite vacation spots are Hilton Head and her grandma’s home in Grand Rapids, MI. She loves shisk-ka-bobs from Café Istanbul.

A big reader, Krista loves sci-fi/fantasy and chick lit books. She just finished reading PC Hodgell series again and the kid’s book “Holes” that she found on her cousin’s bookshelf. And, Krista describes herself as a “sports geek”, enjoying being a sports spectator especially at the Great American Ballpark (I guess that means she’s a Reds fan?!)
